Meet Sobeyda and her son, Juan Figueroa Jr. Sobeyda is the proud Chief Executive Officer of Gemstone Human Services. She is the heart of this company.
Sobeyda always had the dream of owning her own business one day. She initially went to school to earn her associate's degree in travel and tourism. During this time, she gave birth to her son, Juan. Following the graduation of her associate's degree, around Juan’s 1st birthday, Sobeyda began to notice that Juan seemed to be experiencing developmental delays. She noted these delays in several areas, including his speech, walking, and crawling. Not wanting to be away from her son, Sobeyda decided to pursue a different career.
Sobeyda chose to go back to school to major in criminal justice administration with a minor in psychology. Throughout her studies, she worked part-time as a caregiver and found that she thoroughly enjoyed this role. Nearing the graduation of her bachelor’s degree, Juan was diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD). Following graduation, Sobeyda found herself to be very busy taking Juan to doctors’ appointments, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, etc. She found it difficult to maintain a career during this time and chose to focus solely on assisting her son with navigating his daily life challenges. As time went on, Juan's independence and skills grew through consistent caregiving efforts and therapy sessions.
Sobeyda eventually accepted a Supports Coordinator position. Within this role, Sobeyda worked with individuals who were diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was then, when she realized that working with individuals with disabilities was her passion. She found a love for advocacy. It was Juan and this position that made her realize that her dream all along was to create an agency where her passion for caregiving would be able to shine through. This agency is called Gemstone Human Services.
Juan is the reason for Gemstone Human Services. Sobeyda is the heart of it all.
